Back the School

School starts this week in our neck of the woods. For some of you, its already under way; for others you’ve got a couple weeks yet to go. Regardless of when you start, there is no doubt there was, is or will be some mental preparation on your part. What your kids walking in talking about this year?

Well on the big screen, we had Guardians of the Galaxy, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. On the little screen we had Legend of Korra, Under the Dome and the English dub of Attack on Titan. If you’ve not seen these you should brush up. In the video game world kids are still deep in Minecraft.

Not familiar with these titles? Get familiar.

We live in the world of the youth we serve and we need to know what they are talking about. Are you a grade school teacher? You should be watching Nickelodeon and Disney. You should be playing Minecraft’ and you better be able to hold your own in a conversation about the Ninja Turtles.

Do you have the high school football team in your English class? Better brush up on what’s happening in the NFL.

Learn to speak their language and take time to find out what they care about. It’s how you become the trusted adult mentor that will allow you to facilitate some awesome learning this year. So get into the spirit of things and have some fun with pop, pop, pop culture.
